Mouth’s Cradle is the eletronica project of Kevin Hegedus and Brandon Linn, they both go under pseudonyms with Kevin Hegedus as Mouf and Brandon Linn as BLinn. It began while Hegedus was studying music composition at Syracuse Univeristy. Alone he recorded two EPs until he approached Linn to add something else to the project. The short amount of material ranges in sound from the handclap-laden acapella track ‘Man O’ War’ and pretty much bare recording that feature only vocals loops to the simple lo-fi guitar rock of ‘Beach Tales’. Some of the material features rapping that makes me think of early Why? material with Yonni Wolf alone recording the tracks, some of the material also sounds like Neutral Milk Hotel like ‘Huffy Henry’ with guitar distortion and then brass coming in near the end. The duo are currently working on an album trying to combine Hegedus’ lo-fi laptop-diy recordings with some of Linn’s more electronic influences. You can learn more about Mouth’s Cradle on myspace. You can download more of their track on their Facebook page.
Owen Pallett has finally gotten around to completing his third album. After releasing two EPs last year, he will be releasing his new album on Domino, which he recently signed to. It will be titled “Heartland”. It features the Czech Symphony, Matt Smith, Gentlemen Reg, Nico Muhly, and the Arcade Fire’s drummer Jeremy Gara. It will be released on January 12 and it is a concept album, Owen Pallett states in the press release: “The songs themselves form a narrative concerning a farmer named Lewis and the fictional world of Spectrum. The songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis, a young, ultra-violent farmer, speaking to his creator.” The world of Spectrum was also featured on his 2008 EP, “Spectrum, 14th Century”. The record was mixed by Rusty Santos, who produced Animal Collective’s “Sun Tongs” and Panda Bear’s “Person Picth”. You can see the cover above and the tracklisting below.

Austrialian electronic rock band Pivot have covered Warp labelmates Grizzly Bear. Of course being fascinated by all things Grizzly Bear I had to listen to this. Out of the many easier songs that they could have chosen to cover, ‘Knife’, ‘Two Weeks’, they chose one of the compelling tracks from their classic 2006 release “Yellow House”. The cover was recorded last year in November for Warp’s 20 Anniversary release “Warp20 (Recreated)”. It stays fairly true to the original version of the track not the nine minute live version. Full of reverb with the piano, the build-up and extended jam section are given synths with added vocals. You can download the cover below.
